Too bad they tamed the design down quite a lot for the production version (which is still an awesome car).

True. Who would say no to a rear view mirror mounted on the outside of the wind shield?!

This is probably an unique design feature. I know only a handful of racecars that have the rear view mirror outside passenger compartment.

In actual terms they did not really “tame” the Zero’s design.

Cesare Fiorio at Lancia got the inspiration from the general idea of the Zero (mid-engined two-seater) to create a brand new rally weapon for Lancia; later, Gandini (at Bertone) clothed the new mechanical concept with the “roadable” shape we all know and love. Therefore both designs (Stratos “Zero” and the first day-glo Stratos prototype) should be considered different efforts, albeit somehow related.

Gandini has stated that the Stratos was one of his most satisfying projects because of his involvement in making the transition from just a design to something that could be put into production.

Regarding that picture... in order to reinforce the halo effect Bertone loved to drive his cars to shows. Legend has it that the shape of the “Zero” was so distracting that if left a few road accidents in its wake.

I was born the same day Nuccio Bertone died.

Yeah, they don’t share much. I doubt that they even shared the name before they were revealed. Maybe the marketing just liked the name so much that both concepts and the production version used Stratos.

That’s an interesting question, but the way I’ve always seen it, Fiorio started pushing for a new Lancia specific for rallying soon after he saw the “Zero” and I imagine the name just stuck.

Strangely the original script for the Stratos has an apostrophe (STRATO’S). The name itself was cribbed from 60s Rossignol Strato (not Stratos) skis.

Off the top of my head, cars that do share design traits with the series Stratos: the Autobianchi Runabout (another show car by Bertone) and its production version, the Fiat X1/9; or the Dino (later Ferrari) 308 GT4.

To modern eyes, the traffic surrounding it is quite interesting too.

Can’t miss that, also the W108 and two cars behind it, a Citroen DS.
